Devotions & Sacramentals
Simple Ways to Stay Close to God
The Catholic Church is full of beautiful treasures — not just the great Sacraments like the Eucharist and Confession, but also the everyday rhythms of devotions and sacramentals. These are ways of opening our hearts more deeply to God’s presence, helping us to live our faith not only on Sundays, but throughout the week.
They’re not magic formulas or superstitions — they’re gentle helps. Like stepping stones toward Jesus. Like lamps that light the path.
If you’re new to these practices or returning after some time away, you don’t need to do them all at once. Just begin with what draws you. These are gifts, not burdens.
What Are Devotions?
Devotions are prayers or spiritual practices that help us grow in love for God and the saints. They’re not obligatory, but they’ve nourished millions of ordinary Catholics across centuries.
Some of the most beloved devotions include:
The Rosary — Meditating on the life of Jesus through the eyes of Mary. A powerful way to find peace and clarity, especially when life feels noisy or uncertain.
The Divine Mercy Chaplet — A short, simple prayer for trusting God's mercy, especially at 3:00pm, the Hour of Mercy.
Eucharistic Adoration — Spending quiet time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Just being there — heart to heart — can change everything.
The Stations of the Cross — Walking with Jesus on the road to Calvary, especially during Lent.
First Fridays / First Saturdays — Monthly devotions honouring the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
You’ll often find these being prayed at our churches — check the newsletter or parish noticeboard for times.
What Are Sacramentals?
Sacramentals are holy signs and blessings that prepare us to receive God’s grace more fully. They don’t replace the Sacraments, but they flow from them — like grace spilling over into daily life.
Examples of sacramentals include:
Holy Water — A reminder of our Baptism. You can bless yourself on entering church, or take some home to bless your family or home.
Medals, Rosaries & Scapulars — Worn or carried as reminders of God's love and protection.
Crucifixes — Not just decoration — they proclaim the love that saves.
Blessed Salt, Olive oil or Candles — Used in the home for protection and prayer.
House Blessings — A priest can come to bless your home, especially when you’ve just moved in. Just ask.
“The purpose of sacramentals is to sanctify every occasion of life.” — Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1667
If you’d like any items blessed (rosaries, statues, water, olive oil, candles, etc.), feel free to bring them to church or speak to our priest. It’s a joy to bless these things — and through them, your daily life.
Why These Practices Matter
In a busy world, devotions and sacramentals slow us down. They help us remember — who we are, and whose we are. They remind us that God is not far away. He is very near. At the kitchen sink. On the way to work. In the silence before sleep.
These little practices keep heaven close.
You don’t have to do everything at once. Begin where your heart is drawn. The Spirit will guide you.

MORE ABOUT MEDALS!
Miraculous Medal
The Miraculous Medal was revealed to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830 during an apparition of Our Lady in Paris. Mary asked for this medal to be made and worn with trust. She promised that “great graces” would be given to those who wear it with faith.
On the front of the medal is an image of Mary with open arms, rays of light flowing from her hands — symbols of the graces she longs to pour out on the world. Around the image are the words:
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
This simple medal has brought comfort, conversion, and miracles to many. It’s not a lucky charm — it’s a sign of Mary’s motherly care, and a call to open our lives to God through her.
Saint Benedict Medal
The Benedictine Medal is a powerful sacramental rooted in the spiritual legacy of Saint Benedict, the father of Western monasticism. It’s often used for protection against spiritual attacks, temptation, and harm — not as superstition, but as a prayer of confidence in Christ’s victory over evil.
The medal is rich with Christian symbolism, including:
A cross bearing the initials of a Latin prayer of exorcism:
“May the cross be my light; let not the dragon be my guide.”The letters C.S.P.B. — Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (“The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict”)
And the word PAX — “Peace,” the heart of Benedict’s Rule.
When blessed properly, the medal carries a special indulgence and is often placed in homes, worn around the neck, or set into crucifixes.
Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The Brown Scapular is a small piece of brown cloth worn over the shoulders — a sign of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and a quiet commitment to live as her faithful servant. It was given by Our Lady to Saint Simon Stock in the 13th century with the promise:
“Whoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”
Wearing the scapular isn’t magic — it’s about relationship. It’s a sign that you belong to Mary, and that you seek to imitate her ‘yes’ to God in your own life. Those who wear it are encouraged to:
Live a prayerful life, especially through the Rosary
Remain faithful to the Gospel and the Sacraments
Seek Mary’s intercession daily
The scapular can be enrolled by a priest in a short, once-in-a-lifetime blessing, after which any new scapulars you wear carry the same spiritual benefits.
If you’d like to receive or have one of these sacramentals blessed, or if you’d like to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular, simply speak to our priest — he’ll be glad to help.
“Behold your Mother.” — John 19:27
